Statewide health care information

A bill creating the mechanism for statewide health care for public school employees is working its way through the General Assembly.

The House Education Committee in January overwhelmingly voted in favor of the bill, which is now awaiting action by the full House.

PSEA members on the Board of Directors and the House of Delegates are on record in support of HB 1841 in its current form.

If enacted, it would ensure that public school employees and their families – PSEA and other union members – have affordable, quality health care in an era of steeply rising health care costs.

Visit PSEA's  Statewide Health Care page for the latest updates on HB 1841, question-and-answer documents, talking points, and the bill itself.

  • If you have funds invested in 403(b) tax-sheltered accounts through your school district, your ability to control your funds without incurring tax penalties may be in danger in the next two weeks.
  • After September 24, employees will not be able to move money from one investment company to another without risk. The risk will exist until the district adopts a plan document which lists approved vendors.  During this black-out period, members lose the freedom to choose their investment providers.
  • Members who want to make changes in their 403(b) tax sheltered accounts need to do so by September 24.  Failure to pay attention to this IRS rule change could result in unexpected taxes.
